Depression 6

These scriptures and thoughts were provided or inspired by my Pastor, Kent McBay and by others in discussions in his Sunday School class.

Letting others steal our joy can cause depression. Staying in the presence of God can keep us out of depression.

John 16:22: And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Not praying enough can cause depression.

John 16:24: Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Not studying the Bible enough can cause depression.

1 John 1:4: And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

A lack of communication (fellowship) with other believers can cause depression.

2 John 1:12: Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

Unbelief in the resurrection and our glorious future or forgetting those things can cause depression.

1 Corinthians 15:19: If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Covetousness and the love of money can cause depression.

1 Timothy 6:10: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Ecclesiastes 4:6: Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

Malcontents and complainers cause depression for themselves and others.

1 Timothy 6:6: But godliness with contentment is great gain.

Depression can be infectious and harmful to others.

Hebrews 12:15: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Pride can cause depression. Pride is faith in self rather than in God. Pride believes that I should be the final decision maker about what comes to me, that I deserve smooth sailing and do not deserve or need trouble and problems. Pride believes that I do not need what the Lord wants me to have. Humility before God takes us out of depression to His blessing and puts us on a path toward His exaltation.

1 Peter 5:6: Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Psalms 34:18: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
